The advantage of P+R products
Silicone materials are prone to wear and contamination when exposed for a long time. As a 'protective layer + structural support component,' plastic keycaps can significantly improve the overall durability of the keyboard:
- Wear-resistant keycaps, no appearance damage after long-term use: Plastic keycaps have high surface hardness and strong friction resistance. Daily pressing and finger contact will not cause surface scratches or paint peeling. Even after long-term use, the characters on the keycaps are not easy to wear and blur, whereas the surface characters of pure silicone keyboards tend to fall off due to friction.
- Deformation-proof silicone base for more stable structure: Plastic keycaps are fixed to the base of the silicone keyboard (or the underlying PCB) through buckles, inlays, and other methods. They can play a 'shaping' role for the soft silicone keys — preventing local collapse, edge deformation of the silicone caused by long-term pressing, or overall structural displacement due to external impact. This ensures the keyboard maintains stable key travel and trigger sensitivity for a long time.
- Reduced silicone aging, extended service life of core components: Plastic keycaps can block dust, oil stains, and ultraviolet rays from directly contacting the silicone base, slowing down the aging rate of the silicone (e.g., preventing yellowing and hardening of the silicone). At the same time, they avoid direct penetration of substances such as finger sweat and skin care products into the silicone, reducing the loss of elasticity of the silicone caused by chemical erosion. This extends the overall service life of the keyboard by 30% to 50% (compared with silicone keyboards without keycaps).
